Re: Nabesna to McCarthy
I hope folks don't mind me resurrecting this old thread - a friend and I did this route this summer, and it was a fantastic trip.

Re: Beaver Creek Wild and Scenic River
I did a shorter float on Beaver Creek a couple of days ago, and skied out to the Wickersham Dome trailhead - the classic Nome Creek to Mile 28 float, but there is now enough snow for skiing, so we skied to mile 28. It made for a great trip given the unusually high late season water levels. A bit mor...

Re: Denali HWY-7mile lake-Eureka Creek-Delta River
I did this route earlier this summer, and found a life jacket for a dog in some willows on Eureka Creek below the canyon - if someone dropped it and would like it back please get in touch and I can get it back to you. In regards to fishing - I saw lots of grayling in the clear streams that dump into...

Re: Melozitna River
I think it took us a little over 2 and a half days of floating to get from the hot springs to Ruby. None of those days where particularly long, with something like 8 hours of floating each day. The Melozitna River is a bit slow, especially the part below the canyon, but it is fairly scenic. I think ...

Re: West Fork Chena River
I have not floated the West fork of the Chena - I would check were the road crosses it before heading out to verify that there is enough water. I have thought about attempting it but every time I am in that area the water level at the confluence of the West and North forks do not inspire confidence ...

Re: East Fork Susitna - Clearwater Mtns
We did a variation on this trip last june in two nights, three days - with two days of hiking and one of floating. The hiking was pretty mellow, but the last day spent floating was pretty long. The East fork was fast and fun packrafting, however sections of the main Susitna were pretty slow. The mai...

Re: Melozitna River
One of the folks on our trip ended up getting an article published on it in the News Miner -

Not much packrafting content, but an interesting read.

I lost the sticks that go in my inflation bag mid summer last year.. since then I used it without the sticks and it worked fine for me. YMMV of course.

Thanks for the advice - I ended up going by Alaska Raft and Kayak and bought the helmet they recommended -> http://pro-tec.net/water/two_face.html . Hopefully I will not have to test its impact resistance...

Re: Air Mattress Flooring
Does it have to be an inflatable air mattress. Would thermarest ridgerest or some other closed cell foam sleeping pad just to the exact dimensions of the packraft floor work as well. I realize it won't work quite as well likely as a inflatable pad, but I am thinking it could help and CCF pads are c...

Re: Melozitna River
I did a version of this trip a couple of weeks ago and the Melozi hot springs and lodge complex are probably the most interesting place I have ever visited in the back country. The lodge has a creepy yet very cool feel - it feels sort of like the a scene from "The Shining" with a fantastic natural h...

Helmets?
Hello packrafting super geniuses
I am looking for advice about finding a light helmet for packrafting. What are folks using using? Do standard bike helmets provide enough protection?
I would be expecting to use the helmet in class III water in fairly shallow rocky creeks.
Thanks!

Re: Hardsided protective packraft cases???
Your pipe idea might work, but since weight is not too big of a deal, I would suggest getting a steel "open top" drum and putting your rafts in it. They are pretty cheap (I think I paid $40 or so for a 30 gallon open top drum) and available in 15 gallon, 30 gallon, and bigger sizes. I think the 15 g...

I posted a guidebook-style entry about this over on my blog: http://packrafting.blogspot.com/2010/05/wilderness-classic-independent-sheep.html Do you have any plans on publishing a pack rafting guidebook? Your "guidebook-style" posts in your blog are great trip planning/dreaming/motivating material...

Re: Brushkana & Upper Nenana Trip Report
I did a variation on this last weekend - we floated down from the camp ground and took out on one of the many ATV trails once we reached the nenana and hiked back to the denali highway. This let us skip the longer section on the Nenana and kept the total time including a bike shuttle down to around ...
