Re: Middle Fork of the Flathead

Most people who start at Schafer fly-in by plane. Most people who want to hike-in start just down stream at Granite or further down.

Interesting. I was wondering if a fish population could somehow survive up there.

Re: S. Fork / White River loop Trip report

Good to hear. I was up there in 2017 and it was completely dried out. Nothing but dried white rocks above Needle Falls, even the pond was nothing but muck. I was expecting to re-hydrate but I was forced to do a dash up to the Wall and quickly return the 8 miles back down 'dry'. It was miserable. I s...

Re: S. Fork / White River loop Trip report

Keith, how was the water above Needle falls? I'm not talking about rafting it, just as a water source for doing a hiking loop up on the wall.

Re: S. Fork / White River loop Trip report

After digesting your report some more (and getting the kids to bed) I realized that I'm just jealous. :) My first year (late Aug 2017) the rivers (S.F. & M.F.) were nearly dry. My second year (late June 2018) the rivers were like riding a bull. I was hoping this year (19th July) was going to the epi...

Re: S. Fork Flathead Trip July 1-5th

I look forward to your trip report. Your mileage sounds like hell, but very rewarding I'm sure. I remember putting in 200.5 miles in on the PCT (WA section) in 4 Days, 8 hours, 26 minutes when I was a younger man. Even did 52 miles, in VA, in 18.5 hours, having to snowshoe parts of it. So I can imag...

(Third season to the SF. 5th season in the Bob.)

No, you are fine. I'm headed in on the 20th of July and I got some concern because I want it over 1,000. But you got no worries.

Re: SF Flathead via Lodgepole Cr. Just a few notes 2018

Salmo_g: just FYI, Upper Holland Lake is full of trout and 5 days is sort of cutting it close for anything but the float. Boatbender: I put in just below Youngs Falls on June 27th. The level at Twin Cr. South Fork was around 5500cfs I believe. I had originally planned on spending 8 days on the S. Fo...

SF Flathead via Lodgepole Cr. Just a few notes 2018

Though I'd add some notes of my experience. Last year I did the SF by entering at Holland Lake and then down Gordon Cr but this year I decided to try Lodgepole Cr and over Youngs Pass. I'll just go in logical order from trailhead to takeout. First: No shade and very ashy. I found the pass to be comp...

Lost paddle on MF Flathead River

I lost an Aqua-bound Shred 4-pc black kayak paddle on the Middle Fork Flathead River about a mile down stream of Schafer Meadows on June 24th, 2018. Has a small red/white NRS sticker on the left paddle blade. Please feel free to contact me here or by email at magicdinsmore@hotmail.com if you find it...

Re: Record levels on the SF Flathead, is the gage right?

It was a rhetorical question meant to elicit responses like, "Man, that's awesome. This is going to be a great year!"

Didn't really expect, "the snow pack is melting because it's warming and that means water in the river." I think we all got that. But thanks anyway. :)

Record levels on the SF Flathead, is the gage right?

05/07/2018

I'm looking at the levels on the South Fork at Twin Cr. (essentially Spotted Bear) and it's showing 17,600cfs. Either the gage is not functioning properly or that's 3,600 cfs OVER the record as I read it.

Re: SF Flathead River TR - 6/17 thru 6/24/17

If outdoor skills were a trade, I'd be a hiker or a sherpa (but not a porter!). I'm headed back to the SF this year after doing it last year and I am totally hooked on this new application that blends with my hiking. Truthfully, pack rafting has completely run roughshod over hiking and it works with...

I suspect that you are not going to get much information at this time and any that you do get will be irrelevant once the snow melts. ...Just speaking on general knowledge alone. Point A.) Current conditions: That area is covered in probably in at least 10 feet of snowpack at this time so it would b...

I retraced part of your Bob Marshall trip last year in late August. Going back this year ('18) in late June to do it again if you're out there. (Last year hiked in Gordon Cr. and floated down to the White. Hiked up to the Chinese Wall and back down. Floated to Spotted Bear. Hiked from Spotted Bear o...

Re: Packrafting the John Muir trail ?

I've done the JMT 4 times and I'm racking my brain on anything remotely rewarding to use a packraft on. I got nothing. I could see this as a venue for the CDT. So for example you could do parts of the Flathead & Sun river as an alternate through Glacier and the Bob. Although I do have another sugges...

I'm confused ChadL. First let me state that I'm new to rivers and the terminology may be confusing me. Micahruth asked if anyone has beta of the run. You responded that you did the run but you portage 2-3 times. My understanding (and I have been to MCG once) is that it is very difficult to get out o...

How much did the shuttle cost you? I know your question was directed to MS2, but just as a side note I called Tommy today and found out that he only shuttles vehicles, not people. I'm sure for many, from this site, that was a given. I'm from the hiking world and transitioning to the float world, so...

Re: SF Flathead River TR - 6/17 thru 6/24/17

Thanks for posting MS2. I have a similar route planned (in some ways) and I'm interested in a few more details about the White river if you're willing to divulge. Particularly, I'm interested in where you put-in. Not so much the exact spot but more about how far up. You mentioned '6 miles.' From my ...
