Re: The Gila River, NM

I have the aforementioned guide.
Lots of information and very informative.
However, I have not yet floated that reach of the Gila to verify it's accuracy.

Possible Selway packraft trip August 2018

Hi, My wife and I "were" planning on paddle rafting (R2) the Selway this year just after permit season ends. But, as we watch the level drop, we are losing optimism that it will be at a fun level for even a paddle raft in early August this year (which surprises us since they started out with such a ...

Re: SF Flathead via Lodgepole Cr. Just a few notes 2018

Hellcat, Thanks for sharing. Wow, you make it sound like sooooo much fun that I'll just have to go do it too. We hike in on the 19th and 20th over Young's Pass (thanks for the confirmation that the blow-down isn't that bad) and hope to launch in the vicinity of Babcock Creek. I plan to bring a small...

Re: Youngs Creek (gorge) and Flathead SF (now)

Grimm,

Thanks for the great information.
I sure hope Cedarleaf gets a chance to read it before he goes in.

Where did you put-in at and could you have put-in above the gorge (i.e.; was there enough water) if you had wanted to?

Re: Youngs Creek (gorge) and Flathead SF (now)

I got a confirmation on the blow-down on Young's pass today. There is an ~3/4 mile stretch of trail on the N. side of the pass with a thick tangle of of green fir blow-down. It is scheduled for clearing starting on July 20th. The ranger at Spotted Bear strongly suggested going in over Pyramid Pass. ...

Re: Youngs Creek (gorge) and Flathead SF (now)

Cedarleaf,

Cool, have a great time.

FYI, I just got off the phone with the ranger at Spotted Bear and he suggested going in over Pyramid Pass to avoid heavy blow-down on the North side of Young's Pass. Looks to me like it would add about 3.5 miles to the hike in.

Re: Youngs Creek (gorge) and Flathead SF (now)

Hey Cedarleaf, We are heading out there ourselves in a few weeks (hiking in July 19th and 20th). Don't have any experience with that river to answer your questions but here is how I see it: - It appears that the flow has been coming down ~500 cfs per day (Twin Cr. gauge...way downstream by Spotted B...

Escalante in ........ October

I know, I know; "Escalante season is in the spring".
But.........why not in October (esp. the lower reach)?
Historical average in mid-October is 3 cfs (at the hwy 12 bridge).
Any thoughts or, better yet, experience?
Thanks.

Re: Owyhee may 2018

Thank for sharing. Great pictures too.
Good to know about where the lower end is.....

If you're looking for other eastern Oregon rivers, the John Day is still in good shape and the lower should be runnable (in a packraft) most of the summer.

Re: S. Fk. Flathead, Young's Pass fire damage

Thank you Hellcat, the map was indeed helpful. I agree that the worst (assuming red equates is more damage than green) of the burn appears to be along the road to the TH. And, best that I can tell, the trail isn't burned that badly (as you say, probably because there wasn't much left to burn). Looks...

S. Fk. Flathead, Young's Pass fire damage

Hi, I am looking for information on the trail conditions over Young's Pass since the fire last summer that, apparently, burned up the Young's and Jenny Creek drainages ..... I.e.; is it likely to be 15 miles of black soot billowing up with every footstep? Have been trying to reach a Bob Marsh...

HI, I am in Bend. There are tons of great day runs in the PDX area. You might check-in with one of the several clubs up there (OKCC, PDX Kayaker, LCCC) for groups going out.

Re: PFD ride up from capsize!

Ridge Rover, Assuming you have the right size PFD, you probably didn't have it tight enough. Too loose and they can even float off. Adjust it so that a friend (standing in front of you) can't lift the shoulder straps more than a few inches. It should be "snug" but not "tight". After you have it adju...
