Re: Rangitikei River Headwaters Trip Report
My wife and I just repeated this trip from December 22-28th. Its definitely a winner!! We'd add a couple of notes to what Chris reported: 1. The hike in is more difficult than the maps might have you believe, especially in the middle section and there is a lot of up and down. It starts out as a moto...

Re: Portaging with a Cargo Fly
I think Howard is right on. The idea with the snack cake dry bags that go in the cargo fly is three fold. First, they offer a secondary inflation chamber that will keep your boat afloat and your gear dry to paddle to shore in the event of significant deflation. Second, they allow you to balance your...

2008 Blue Yak with Deck
I have a 2008 Blue Yak with the old style spray deck (velcro up the middle and across the front). The deck is an old version of the current cruiser deck. The boat is the old style that does not have the current elongated ends. Its still a great boat and its in great shape! $400, free shipping to US.

Two Unrigged Fjord Explorers for Sale
I have two unrigged 2009 Fjord Explorers for sale. One is blue and the other is San Juan Mud. Both have very little use as my primary boat is a decked Llama. They do not have the longer stern of the current models, but they are still a great all purpose boat for just about any adventure. $600 obo fo...

Hi,
Thor Tingey here. My family owns Alpacka, but I live in Portland. I have both a Yak and Llama in the new style if you want to check them out. Evenings are best. Contact me using my full name (no caps) and gmail.

Re: Oregon - Eagle Cap Wilderness - Minam River
I found the Minam while map researching about 4 months ago. I've lived in Portland for about 6 years now and have longed to find a true packrafting adventure in Oregon. When I finally found the Minam I was convinced it would be the perfect trip. I only told Sheri and a few friends about it and plann...

SOLD - 2 Alpackas (one older yellow Yak and one green Yak)
Hello All, I am looking to reduce the number of packrafts that I have hanging out in my basement. I would rather have someone enjoy them than not get used. Here is what I have: 1. Original yellow Yak sized boat. This is one of the earliest commercially made boats that Alpacka produced. It does not h...

I am 99% positive it is a Yak due to the Y in the serial number.

Re: Oldest Alpacka raft still being used?
I have two old boats. An original yellow boat built at Jacks Plastic Welding (no seat) that still works great. I don't personally use it much, but it is really light and it does get loaned out occassionally. I also have the very first working prototype boat (the mythical "white" boat) in storage in ...

Re: Multi-Use Footwear
If it fits, the Vitesse is probably one of the all time great wilderness lightweight shoes. The plastic plate in the forefoot is excellent for river cobbles in Alaska, but can break the shoe in half on really long (200+ mile) trips. There are also several really good high top shoes built on a runnin...

White Salmon River, WA
Three of us (two packrafts, one kayak) floated the BZ corner to Husum Falls section of the White Salmon River just across the Columbia from Hood River last weekend. This is a perfect moderately difficult packraft (PR 3-4+) run late season when the water is low. There are probably 12-20 rapids in the...

Re: Western Arctic Rivers: Utukok, Kugururok, Noatak
Sean, Thor Tingey here; I helped start Alpacka, but now I am practicing law in Portland and don't spend as much time with the company. I saw that you are in the White Salmon area. If you need any help with the boats or want to some tips on floating and are willing to come to Portland, I would be hap...

Re: Twenty Mile Safety Meeting
Since the end goal is avoiding a jetboat v. powerboat collision (we know who wins that one), I think the easiest approach is to install signs both at the boat launch and the trail head explaining the conflict and asking packrafters to wear very bright clothing on the river and jetboaters to keep the...
