Re: Cross Country Packrafting Boots

I always use an old pair of tennis shoes on my packrafting trips. They drain well, are comfortable, and easy to scramble in. I've found it doesn't pay to have expensive shoes cause they wear out fairly quickly being wet then dry a lot. They key is to wear neoprene socks- they will keep your feet muc...

Iniakuk River- the Arctic’s Best Kept Secret

I’ve been a Brooks Range wanderer since 1999 and I can’t seem to stop going back. I’ve floated all the classics- from the Noatak to the Koyukuk and everywhere in between. This year I wanted to find something different. With Google satellite imagery I noticed a topographically unique and intriguing a...

Re: Brooks Range Alatna/ Noatak condition?

The rivers were high in mid-June because of the late spring conditions but all should be good now. Any amount of rain will swell the river rapidly due to permafrost...

Cataract Canyon, December

It was eight degrees when we arrived at Elephant Hill. The visitor center was closed and it appeared that we were the only ones dumb enough to visit Canyonlands National Park in December. I wondered why we bothered to pay for the permits when a ranger pulled up. I would have hidden our paddles had I...

Re: American Creek, Katmai NP

Just got back from packrafting American Creek with two buddies, what a great trip! We began our float in early July, before the salmon run, so we didn’t have to contend with a multitude of bears. In fact, we only saw two. We took Brad’s advice though and brought a bear-fence anyway. The alders were ...
