Rangitikei River Headwaters Trip Report

For me, this trip is going to take some doing to top. Other than patches of poor weather, it hit all the marks for a great packrafting trip. Great scenery for the walk in, fun drops in a small but floatable creek, sight fishing for browns and rainbows, beautiful clear water, campfires and plenty of ...

Have sent a PM but the system is horribly unreliable in my experience so you will see a facebook friend request from me too - respond and I'll send the PM. Note sure if my fears about spam are realistic but I am too chicken to post my e-mail address here!

Re: Alpacka in the Waikato

Craig J - I saw your posts on facebook with intentions for a central north island trip. I am interested in joining you if I can make dates work, but late November would be better for me. Looks like you have dates set and are flying into Taupo? I have a big butt llama with thigh straps and a dry suit...

Re: Clarence journey - from the source - early October 2014

Sounds awesome Dulkara. Bad timing for me but appreciate the general invite. I have been eyeing up something similar with a walk up the Sabine River from Lake Rotoroa, over Waiau Pass and then a float down the Waiau River and out to Highway 7 (then hitting the hot pools in Hanmer causing a large sli...

Re: Mohaka River, North Island, NZ, Trip Report

I considered the Taharua but opted out this time - the write-up on www.rivers.org.nz says there are grade 4 patches lower down and I was by myself so took the safer option of walking. The Taharua sections you can see from the trail look like nice paddling though. Camera is a Sony NEX-7 with 18-55mm ...

Mohaka River, North Island, NZ, Trip Report

After having to cancel a previous opportunity due to rain and high water, I got my chance to walk in Waitangi Day 6th February and float 60km of the Mohaka River solo from Poronui Station down to State Highway 5 near Te Haroto. I was going to do it over 4 days but rain forced me (sound familiar?) to...

Re: Packrafter in South Westland

I agree; that is a gracious invite Dulkura from a great part of NZ. It's a trek from Auckland to Harihari (although I am closer than Hobart) so I can't pop down straight away but I am keen to come and pay a visit. The stars could be aligned later this year. Cheers, Chris.

Re: New packrafter in Waikato, NZ North Island.

Santa was good to you this year Handscrape. I am a keen packrafter living in Auckland so have to head to the Waikato region or beyond for floats given the absence of decent rivers up here. I'd be more than happy to come for a paddle at some point and will let you know when I am headed south to see i...

Tongariro, Ohinepango and Whakapapa Rivers – December 2013

Last weekend I took a couple of extra days off and rafted the Tongariro, Ohinepango and Whakapapa Rivers in the central North Island (NZ). The Tongariro is a popular well documented river with a grade III section from the Poutu Intake to Blue Pool – cold water in a beautiful gorge with 60 rapids ove...

Re: NZ & sand flies

Steve/Fish de jour - that would be great, family permitting. A week later and we could have hit a a headwater or two over the hill as they open October. Are you driving from Auckland to get down there or flying into Taupo? Can't say you'll need sand fly patterns (there - I actually commented on the ...

Re: NZ & sand flies

I'll be fishing and packrafting the Tongariro and other rivers 5th to 8th September and would be keen to meet other rafters for a beer or an excursion if any of you are around. I'll be at the Sportsmans Lodge in Turangi on a company trip we do every year. If that doesn't coincide with your travels, ...

Trip report: Whirinaki River, North Island, NZ

I spent ANZAC day 2013 solo-packrafting a section of the Whirinaki River through the Urewera National Park. Here is my sharing. Stayed under a tarp at the Department of Conservation Mangamate Falls campsite Wednesday night then drove back to Highway 38 and dropped raft gear off at the river in the b...

Re: Upper Ngaruroro, Central North Island, NZ

Pictures from from the Ngaruroro trip we did from Kuripapango (well at least I hope they uploaded!) below. Tim, for the gnarlier rapids on the Ngaruroro, I tried to make sure my "support raft" went first! And then I followed. Some areas there were no portages - but to be honest I didn't even look fo...

Tim - I am impressed. With a big pack that would have been some work to get to your put in. And its remote alright for limited experience. Good on you for getting after it. We did a 3-day trip in October 2011 from your take out down about 50km - me in an Alpacka Yak and 3 mates in an incept raft. We...

Re: New Zealand Trip Ideas?

A little late to the discussion but am keen to do trips with others also. I live in Auckland and have been down sections (some as overnighters) of the Tongariro, Ngaruroro and Whakapapa in the central North Island and keen to do more (including SI as opportunties arise). Have plenty of ideas for tri...
