Partners For Alaskan trip Summer 2014

I am looking for partners for an adventure trip in Alaska. I am open to where we’d go, but I have been focusing my research on the Anaktuvuk Pass / Bettles area of the Gates of the Arctic Nat’l Park. A trip starting in Anaktuvuk and ending in Bettles, or perhaps Allakaket is pretty easy to put toget...

Re: inexperienced packrafter looking for upper midwest mento

Spencer, in perusing this forum, you're the only other upper-midwest-based person I have come across. I am in Wisconsin. I got my raft just 15 months ago. I have learned to paddle it and and to do whitewater by joining the Sierra Club Wisconsin River Touring Section http://wisconsin.sierraclub.org/r...

Bob Marshall/South Fork - Trip Report

Trip Report - South Fork of the Flathead - July 2013 Fredk and I started out from the trail head at the end of the road up Lodgepole Creek out of Ovando on the south side of the Bob. The parking lot was full of trucks and horse trailers, with no other cars. The trail immediately heads up towards You...

Re: Summer 2013 trip to the Bob Marshall in Montana

Hi raised2b, FredK and I went last week. We'll get a full trip report in later - here's the skinny report: we hiked in at Lodgepole TH north of Ovando, went up 1,700 ft, over the pass - not too bad of a climb, then down to Youngs Creek and along that to the confluence of Youngs & Danaher, the start ...

Re: Summer 2013 trip to the Bob Marshall in Montana

Looks like there are two of set for this trip so far. We are looking for a third person to join us. We are planning on meeting at the trail head on Friday 7/5. We will start at Monture Creek or one of the other trail heads on the South, South West side, go up over a pass into Young's or Danaher Cree...

Re: Summer 2013 trip to the Bob Marshall in Montana

FredK, Thanks for responding! The route I have been looking at is to go in at Monture Creek TH in the south, up Monture Creek and over Hahn Creek Pass, down Hahn Creek to Youngs Creek. If that is paddle-able, then paddle to the South Fork, otherwise walk. That is something like 28 miles of hiking an...

I am going to make one of these throw bags as the one I made for canoeing is too heavy. Can you post a picture of what yours looks like? thanks

Re: Summer 2013 trip to the Bob Marshall in Montana

We got the low rate for the horse ride in by joining another party's trip. We had to go on their route and on their date. The outfitter's logic as she explained it to me was that she was incurring no additional costs as the horses we rode, if they didn't go on the trip, would just be left in the cor...

Re: Alpacka DrySuit

Did you end up getting one? If so, what's been your experience? I spoke with Kokatat this weekend - they said its idea for pack rafting, packs very small, and of course is light. The guy definitely steered me towards this one rather than another one he had on the rack there and could have sold right...

Re: Lightweight PFD

I spoke with Jeff the product manager with Kokatat yesterday and asked him what they have in lightweight, low-volume PFDs for pack rafting. He pointed me in the direction of the types of PFDs discussed by Kirkinbend. When I suggested they consider 'a lightweight, packable hybrid' foam/inflatable PFD...

Re: Lightweight PFD

I am also in the market for a ultra-light PFD. A quick Google search turned up poor reports on these automatically inflating vests for kayaking etc.as they blow up so much or in odd shapes that it constrains your movement and it becomes difficult to get back into the boat. Plus a friend who uses one...

Wisconsin weekend trips

A search for 'Wisconsin' in the forum doesn't come up with much, but I have heard tales of other packrafters in the state. If you're up for a day or weekend trip, contact me. I'd like to get in as much paddling in as possible this summer since last summer was so dry. We can make our own trip or go w...

Re: Summer 2013 trip to the Bob Marshall in Montana

MT, Thanks for your reply. I have not done any further planning for this trip since my post so plans are still wide open, so a weekend trip is possible. I'll be coming from Wisconsin so I am thinking of a longer total trip, say 5 days. Depending on final plans and who's going we may be able to combi...

Summer 2013 trip to the Bob Marshall in Montana

I am putting together a packraft trip for this summer into the Bob Marshall and I am looking for one or more partners to share in the adventure. The timeframe will be this June or July, something like five days. I am focusing on the Bob Marshall Wilderness area given its long rivers and unbroken str...
