Upper Waiau R Trip Report

Just returned from an amazing trip down the Upper Waiau, near Hanmer Springs, South Island. It was to be our first real Grade3 river, and was promised to be a spectacular example of NZ sub-alpine valleys and gorges, which did not disappoint. Our adventure consisted of 6hrs hiking over the Fowler Pas...

Advice on Grade3 ww without a spray deck

Hi guys, I'm keen to move up to grade3, but have been given a recommendation by an experienced friend that a spraydeck is necessary for grade3 rivers like Kaituna, Motu, Upper Rangitikei, etc. I simply can't afford the upgrade, and shipping. What's everyone's view on that? I'm prepared/expecting to ...

Re: Alpacka in the Waikato

Hi Dave,

Not in Waikato, but a couple of us are up in Auck. Don't do any fishing from mine, and fairly new to it all, but keen to help any way I can.

Good luck

Haha, small world ay! Good to e-meet you Chris. Seen you around the geocaching forums too, so I bet we've been to the same places :-) Yeah, absolutely keen for a trip sometime? I've got Waioeka R on my list of missions, and Taharua/Mohaka ofcourse. And Motu, oneday. But yeah, keen to try a Gr3, so K...

Re: Mohaka River, North Island, NZ, Trip Report

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the writeup!

This ones been on my list for a while. Did you consider rafting the Taharua River instead of walking through Poronui?

Great pix btw... what camera/lenses did you use?

Cheers
Chris

Ngaruroro R trip report

I recently completed a packrafting mission down the Ngaruroro this summer for 2 mates, which turned out to be a fantastic intro to packrafting. It was inspired by timlusk's trip from further up the river, and incorporated 1 day of walking with 3 days Grade 2+ paddling. All nights spent in small old ...

Re: Upper Ngaruroro, Central North Island, NZ

Hi Timlusk, That sounds awesome mate. I'm going to give it a go this summer. Can you tell me how you arranged transport? Or did you leave cars at either side of the Kaweka's? I'm hoping I can arrange someone from Napier to drop us off, and then hitch back to Napier afterwards. My plan is to start fr...
