Re: Cataract - a West Side Story

Ran this again over April 20-22nd @ 7.2K. Unlike last time, the drive in to Teapot Rock was really easy, no issues with washed out roads. Took 1.5hrs with the bike drop off. Wish I could say the same about the water level, 7.2K wasn't any easier that 9.2K, all the rocks came out making for big techn...

Here's a sweet 2-3 day packraft on the Dirty Devil river in Utah. It's a loop so no shuttle (2 WD OK), the hike in is spectacular, the hike out a bit of a grunt, abet pretty once in Burr Pt Canyon. Just ran it (Fence to Coyote) at 10-12 CFS, really nice, butt dragging through about 1 in 10 rapids, only had to exit the boat a couple times to float it over gravel bars. Wouldn't want to run it at any less. I can't imagine paddling this at 2. It would destroy the bottom of your boat. Had a complet...

Well I pulled the trigger for another trip to Hawaii. The plan, paddle the Na Pali Coast in packrafts to Kalalau beach (6 miles) and backpack back (11 miles). Can't comment on the Supai but have paddled the DD. This, like the Escalante, require a bit of boat dragging so don't go too light. The Alpacka Yak has served me very well for years. I wouldn't want to take anything more fragile into the backcountry. As for the DD, this is a great trip, see the writ...

Cataract - a West Side Story

Last fall it was a monsoon and a very real threat of being stranded for days. “Bring extra food,” said the NPS. This spring it was cold feet and a nagging voice, "why don't you run the standard Elephant – Imperial loop first?” Check. But this fall, on Halloween, weather and partners aligned (Chad L,...
