Re: inexperienced packrafter looking for upper midwest mentor

I'm Doug Tally, formerly of Chicago, retired living in Detroit Metro. I have been attending the APA Roundups and traveling the west. I still have the Denali Llama and will attend the 2018 Roundup in Colorado. Highlight early 2017 travels was packrafting the whitewater park in Durango, CO. I judge it...

Re: inexperienced packrafter looking for upper midwest mentor

So I did go alone on the Peshtigo Pierson Gorge from Niagara, WI. ClassI IV PG drop may be rated due to drop and level/fps time of year at its worst. Wintering on the Gallatin River, Gallatin Gateway, MT in the 'Canyon'. Instructing at Big Sky 2 days a week. Ready to slip into the Gallatin today fol...

Re: MI-UP, WI

Hi Miles, we retired and headed to MT for the ski season and instructing at Big Sky. We'll be traveling the country for a couple years. I like the Peshtigo in WI. I drop my bike at the State Park (Piers Gorge) for takeout. Drive back to Niagara put in. I put a backpack inside the tubes and pack up t...

Good to see a recent post from Bozeman. We're here for the season instructing at Big Sky and live at the Inn On The Gallatin (Cafe). Looking for partner to raft with here/now. Ready to put in where I live and take out at the Gallatin River Bridge at the Canyon entrance as it flows to West of 191. Do...

Re: Bear River packrafting in Petosky, Michigan

Looks fun, we tried to spot it from the car summer 2014. There were too few signs for us to locate it for a look-see. We'll come back with packraft. I want whitewater at high levels but won't go alone. Dry suit and gear ready. Avail for lower or UP, live in Chicago and it's an easy drive to WI and UP.

Re: Towing a small raft with a packraft

John gave some good advice I didn't think of. With regard to the dog wanting to be with you and not staying on the raft. If you're on flat water you don't need the deck in place. Just roll it up. I have one too can't remember if it comes off, I think so. I can just see it, the dog is going to be paw...

Re: BWCA

I have an Alpacka Denali Llama purchased in Sep 2015. I can't directly answer the question but my guess is a canoe averages 4 mph and a packraft 2mph. That said, I found this BWCA conversation about canoe speed, see the link below. I think you're looking for mpt from x to xx and how much more effort...

Re: inexperienced packrafter looking for upper midwest mento

Any of you that posted still checking this string? I'm having a ball at Montrose Harbor (Chicago) with wind waves get huge and there are lots of kit boarders. I have the Alpacka Denali Llama and it does move through waves and 20mph winds gusting highter. Last went about Oct 2015 at around 60 degrees...

Re: Human waste disposal system. Any tips?

I got the 4" pvc idea from the GC NPS. As one prior said it's a glued end and a removable end with relief valve. The prior suggestion for the plastic container with red cap from Europe will not work as it says if it's too full the lid will release. If it's that fragile... now way. My dilemma now is ...

Re: Inflation issues?

I had the same issue first time in the living room. Outside is much different and as one said, you figure out how to manage the bag for air and not to crimp. 7 pumps sounds great and i don't think you would ever go beyond 12 as you get better and better down to 10... or 7 is really good. Same as the...

Re: Drysuit recommendations?

What did you decide on for a drysuit? I'm at that point now. I had not idea the Meridian was that durable, it was the top contender until now I see the 'Tough' from Alpacka and made by Kokatat. So I need to figure out which one to go with. Would love to know which you purchased and what your feedbac...

Re: Drysuit wear from Alpacka Whitewater Skirt

Purchase the additional seat or figure out how to increase the height of your belted in seat. Adjust paddle length longer if you can, if not consider swapping out your paddle for an adjustable model. One of both... seat or longer paddle will do it... I think! Let me know what worked. I'm getting rea...

Re: Best fit Alpacka for bike-rafting/touring?

I just looked at the size chart and I think you would be delighted with the Mule. The cargo fly is a must and it holds a lot. I just tried to purchase two more storage bags for inside the cargo fly and could not purchase any. They have to hold what they have just for new purchases. I suggest trying ...

I have the Denali Llama and I can't imagine having a packraft any smaller to bikeraft. I'm 5-8 and 190 and I would at least look at the next size up. Will you have a backpack too and how big?

Packrafts and Alligators?

Do Gators discern between a hard side canoe or boat and a nice soft chewy packraft? I want to packraft the Wekiva River in Florida where alligators are plentiful but so are rental canoes and paddling traffic so gators would be accustomed to the routine. 12-18 months ago a woman swimming in the Wekiv...

Re: inexperienced packrafter looking for upper midwest mento

Sorry to say I've not made a purchased the Alpaca yet. Now I'm intrigued by the SUP (stand up paddle) boards as an alternative to a kayak. It doesn't compete with the Packraft. I was in a small plastic kayak in the Sea of Cortez about 1/2 mile from a guy on an SUP. For hours we went the same speed s...

Re: inexperienced packrafter looking for upper midwest mento

Hello Karen, where did you go on the adventure? I saw a great deal on a used kayak and took it for a spin but it was to long, too slim, and desiring to turn over. The owner described it's really hard to handle in 10-15 mph winds unless your really experienced, so that was that. However, we have 3 tr...
